An extensive system of pipelines, underground gas storage facilities, measurement and regulating stations, compressor stations and delivery stations is necessary to ensure safe gas supplies. Roughly 80 Percent of all gas used is moved by pipeline, the remaining 20 Percent is transported in special ships, so-called LNG tankers.
Pipelines permit large volumes of natural gas to be transported safely, quickly and cost-effectively. At the same time, this modern and reliable transmission system uses neither roads nor motor fuel and therefore causes no noise or exhaust fumes which would impact on the environment. Find out more about the transportation of natural gas in our animated special.
